Season's Greetings 2010

Another holiday season means also the end of another year. Given the events of 2010 (and a few leading up), many of us have had some challenges and excitement. I hope you, like I, am grateful for what I have learned, experiences I have had, and the end to one year…but also the start of a new one.

For me, the year started with a huge commitment of time, work and creativity to finish up an important project at work. I had the opportunity to be part of the official product launch in Bangkok, Thailand. I was invited to be part of the panel that presented to 30,000 people and conduct (what seemed like endless) product demonstrations and presentations to those in attendance of the event. As part of that experience, I was able to participate in some sightseeing and explorations of Bangkok and the area. It was an incredible adventure and I will always have a special love for Southeast Asia.

To prove that when we start to get comfortable in life, challenges inevitably follow – I was laid off in March and found myself unemployed for the first time in my adult life. As unpleasant as it is to be out of work, I also found it opened some ideas to me I hadn’t considered. I parted ways with my former employer with fantastic experience and friends and associates around the world – for that, I am very grateful.

Over the spring, I visited family, took a holiday to Provence, and brushed off a few hobbies I had been neglecting. France was just a dream and exactly what I needed to get motivated and refocused in life. Southern France is an amazingly beautiful corner of the earth! Upon my return, I started some consulting work and actively interviewing around the country.
In the summer, I kept at the work of finding work and found an opportunity to work with a start-up project. It was a lot of work, but put me in partnership with some amazing professionals. I did some local exploring of the western US and kept at some fun personal projects. Sadly, my dear grandmother passed in June and I feel her loss in my life keenly. I am grateful for her legacy of learning, service and hard work. The happy side effect was the opportunity to reconnect with family and family history.

With fall bought a singular experience of completing my first half marathon in Park City. It was absolutely amazing and terribly taxing, but I am thrilled I put myself up for a tough goal and accomplished it. I was elected to my community’s HOA and returned to tutoring at an elementary school nearby. The start-up project I had been working on over the summer failed to accomplish its goals and so I redoubled my efforts to find an employment opportunity as I DO NO do well without something challenging to do.

Here we are in winter and I have a few more consulting and start-up projects, but not yet the gainful employment I have been working for. I am still doing some searching and interviewing across the country and locally and feel confident something will come my way soon. My dad and stepmom joined me for Thanksgiving (my first solo) and we had a lot of fun and a lot of food – a perfect way to start out the holiday season. I have entered this season with the spirit of gratitude and excitement for the future. With love and well wishes – Merry Christmas and a Happy New year!

This has been a year of adventures! I did a fair amount of traveling, working and celebrating some big events with my loved ones. I feel grateful, loved and like I had a significant amount of growth – whether I wanted it or not. So, here’s a little list of 2009’s highlights…

Trips:
Japan, Mexico, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Ireland, Korea, California, Hawaii, Florida, Idaho, Oregon, Nevada, Pennsylvania and New York

Events:
My brother married a fantastic woman (whom I am thrilled to add to my list of people I adore). She and my brother have three kids between them and one more on the way. Yay!

Three of my dear friends (each of whom I have known for over ten years) married great partners and are happily settled in Newlywed-ville.

Some of my friends moved, married, changed jobs, traveled, traveled with me, shared adventures with me and generally added a lifetime of good in 2009.

I got to visit with my loved ones all over the country. Many of whom, I don’t get to see very often, so it was a good year.

I put some new stamps in my passports, logged some serious air miles, ate some really bad food and some really great food, made some new friends in faraway places, bought a few treasures and thoroughly enjoyed the experiences (once my perpetual state of jetlag waned).

Adventures:
Taking a flying lesson, feeding an elephant, riding an elephant, eating foreign food that looked and tasted really interesting, swimming with a dolphin, snorkeling a beautiful reef, a lot of driving (sometimes on the “wrong” side of the road, which is the “right” side of the road in some places), swimming next to sea turtles, running, rebuilding my garden, hanging wallpaper, attending Governor’s Gala, thoroughly enjoying some spa treatments, taking a ski lesson, learning how to be a production assistant, developing a personal care line for a market in Asia (a hundred mini-adventures right there), and cutting my hair off!

I gained and lost:
My iPod, Blackberry, one sock from a pair, luggage in a foreign country, time zones, sleep, weight (time zones and sleep), job assignments, romantic interests, keys, running pace and my mind

So, I think that means 2009 was a memorable year…bring on 2010.

Happy Easter Everyone!

We had an egg decorating contest and egg/candy hunt at work on Good Friday - that's almost as good as having the day off, right?

Is my "basket" too big? Does it make me look greedy? Really?

Not even an "honorable mention"! My egg was so cheerful and full of color, but some people played to the judges. Sell outs! What happened to art for art's sake?

Oh well! I hope everyone had a lovely holiday.

After Ireland, it was on to New York. It's a great place to shop, hit a few fantastic art museums and recover from jet lag.

My sister-in-law and niece flew in to meet us there for some fun. We stared at really awesome art - modern, classic and strange. We ate food with flavor (sorry Ireland). We watched Kaela master the art of hailing a cab. We got caught in a massive rainstorm, got completely drenched and then took cover in an Olive Garden (but not before a photo with the Naked Cowboy). We know how to really live it up!

Ireland - Day Seven

Day Seven - our last day in beautiful Ireland. We went to Powerscourt. We went out with a bang! It's an old property with incredible gardens (think Versailles without so much walking). Like most old castles with land...skip the house and head outdoors for the real show.
Insider tip - best food we had in Ireland was the cafe here. I know!

Ireland - Day six

Today's post is all about Dublin!
Did you know that Dublin got its name two Gaelic words: 'dubh' meaning 'black' and 'linn' means 'pool' (or 'mire') - Black Pool? Excellent marketing, if you ask me! Seriously, it's a very nice city with very lousy drivers...welcome to Europe.
Did you know that Dublin has a whole church named after me? Technically, the church predates me by a couple hundred years, but I was still tickled to see a giant church with a giant red door with a giant reputation for serving the underprivileged.
Did you know that there is colorful statue of Oscar Wilde at Merrion Square?

Did you know that Ireland has only two spoon sizes: tiny and giant?

Did you know that I had 15 minutes of fame while in Ireland? Actually, it was 15 seconds...and it was just the news...and only the people traveling with me even knew about my 15 seconds. I will take what I can get.

Did you know that Dublin is lovely at sunset?

Other things I recommend in Dublin: Trinity College, Book of Kells, National Gallery, St. Stephen's Green, prayer service at St. Patrick's, Temple Bar and singing tour bus drivers.

Things I don't recommend in Dublin: driving, eating, staying longer than a day or two (spend your time in the countryside...still wouldn't recommend driving or eating there either).

Ireland - Day Five

Bru Na Boinne - Newgrange and Dowth. Seriously cool structures - that are seriously hard to find and since driving in Ireland is not exactly a treat... - older than the Egyptian pyramids. Newgrange has a really cool winter soltice angle and quite an interesting story in general.

Kylemore Abby is super lovely...with a little church and beautiful wooded grounds. That was pretty awesome. After that, we went to Connemara National Park where I climbed (or rather was hoisted) up on a giant rock for the most spectacular view. We got quite an education on peat bogs too (got your curiosity piqued?).

First day was, well, a lot of fighting to keep my eyes open. Two things helped that. One, driving in Ireland is pretty much a constant state of adrenaline. Yikes. Two, we got a massive cold rain storm as we were walking around the Rock of Cashel. Yep, those two things will keep you awake. Now that we have that out of the way...Ireland is beautiful. What is the perfect day to plan your itinerary for Ireland? Well, Saint Patrick's Day, of course! We were all dressed in green and thought a festive bit of soda bread and Irish stew...but Kneader's was out. Then we decided we should get some green bread or bagels and corned beef and cabbage, but the store was out. (Who knew the Irish were so big-time in Utah?) Next, we decided to pay homage to all things international...French artisan bread, chips and seven layer dip, Italian spiced beef, potatoes (that's as good as Ireland's representation got), Jello-O (America) and an orange grown somewhere in South America. Believe it or not, we ate well and have a darn cool plan for how to spend our time in Ireland.

My dear friends created a day of super for my birthday. Early in the morning, I was hauled off to IHOP for our tradition of starting each other's birthdays with loads of simple carbohydrates. We then took to the hills for some winter watching via snowshoes. Beautiful, fun and awesome workout. There were some snow fights, lovely vistas and falling down. Next, Mexican for lunch, then pedicures in the evening followed by a gathering at of friends for games, concert by Cat and cake by Lorie. It was the best day and I have the best friends.

Swinging, Hiking, Exploring

I went to Oregon to visit Dad and Diane for Thanksgiving. They have a gorgeous property just outside of Salem. Dad built a super-high, super-fast, super-duper tree swing - just like the one I had in Minnesota. He is (rightfully) very proud of it and all kids and grandkids get to test it out.

My youngest stepsister, Cheryl, was there too, so we took some time to catch up. She has a heart of gold and being around her is fun. We went shopping, exploring (code for getting very lost driving around) and just had a great little vacation.

We returned to a place I fell in love on my last visit - Silver Falls. We went to a new lovely place - Portland's Japanese Gardens. Thanksgiving holiday? Two thumbs up.

Jazzy Monday

A very nice vendor of mine invited me (plus one) to join her tickets to a Jazz game. My trusty stand-in date, Lori, attended with me. We watched (and cheered in vain) as an injured line up of Jazz players worked very hard against the Bulls - to no avail. We ate junk, traded boy stories and enjoyed the evening completely. We even got to watch some seriously coordinated and limber jump-ropers at half time. All in all, not a bad for a Monday night.

According to Stephanie, the "F" word is what happens on the birthday following your 39th year. Considering that Miss Lori had just such an event coming up, we planned a snappy party for the occasion. A group of Lori fans gathered for a lovely meal at the Melting Pot (decor by Melissa) and then a girls-only slumber party in a grand little hotel downtown. If you ask me, the "F" word(s) event was fabulous and fantastic fun.

I love Hilton Head Island. I loved it when I was here in March and I love it more now. It's warm, it's lush and it's all about hospitality.

My work event is over (as of an hour ago) and it went very well. I would say it's the best event I have been to in the last two years (and that's not because I planned it). Everyone was great. All the meetings went well. The food was awesome. The excursions were fun. The weather was brilliant (stormy during our scheduled meetings and sunny during scheduled excursions).

In my opinion...everyone needs to spend a week here and it has to be in a room facing the ocean. Don't worry, you won't have to sell a kidney to do it - I know people now.

Tomorrow my baby sister is flying out to meet me here for some sisterly bonding over the next three days. Oh yeah, I am excited about it.

Crunch

Today a lady made my car "crunch". Apparently she didn't get the memo that people going straight have the right-of-way over someone turning left. I honked, served and swore...but she continued to turn and then collide with my car. (By the way, the swearing didn't really do anything to prevent the impending hit as it came about a millisecond before the crunch.) The early opinion is that my car is totaled and that makes my heart break into a thousand pieces. Anyone who has a car well-loved and paid-off can understand my pain. The other pain is located in my head, neck and back. Ouch. The early opinion is that the next two days will be infinitely worse than the last two hours...so much to look forward to. I now have ouch back, neck, head and am without a car. Yea me.

P.S. Anyone who has been on "Piano Watch 2008" will be happy to know that I am now in possession of Grandma's piano. It might not be too late to become a concert pianist or maybe even a terribly-misunderstood-singer-songwriter.

I fall for Sundance

Every fall my friend Sarah and I participate in a lovely little tradition we started years ago...we take a long lunch at Sundance. We buy a lift ticket, buy lunch at the deli and buy some time to catch up. We ride the lift up and back down and enjoy the amazing foliage all around us as we nibble on treats and talk about everything from politics to men (draw your own parallels). We always get some photos and great memories. Let me tell you...on this side of the Mississippi, this is the best way to enjoy the (very, very short) Autumn.

A new place to love

On the way back from Korea, I spent two days in Salem, Oregon to see Dad and Diane's new place and explore a bit. I now love Oregon - lots.

Not far from where they live is a great national park with waterfalls, lush green woods and great hiking. I have found that hiking in this park is a great way to stay awake when battling gross jetlag. Don't take my word for it...try it yourself.

Touring around

Our last day in Korea...so we toured around. We went to this ancient village and learned about the people who lived there, their art, culture and history. It's amazing to be in a place with 2000 years of recorded history. We went to an active Buddhist monastery and finished the day with shopping...naturally.
The monastery and its grounds were so lush and beautiful.

This is the photo op of the grounds...our guide said we HAD to have our picture taken here, so we did.

Stack the rocks and make a wish - imagine a whole garden of stacked rocks. A lot of wishes...

The monastery roof needs retiling, so "buy" a tile and everyone writes a wish or desire for the future...this was our group's tile. It's heavier than it looks - maybe we all wanted too much.

Korea's version of "Sprite" - not much better than the Coke.

So, my review of South Korea? The people are warm, kind, intelligent and rightfully proud. The country is clean, modern and lovely. The history is interesting, the food (mostly) is yummy and the shopping is fun. I would recommend it.

A bit of work too

The meetings were a hit and the crowd went a little nuts - but all in good fun.

Tour of Busan

Our first full day was a city tour of Busan (lovely) and then to the first of our meetings. This is a really cool place. The hotel is right on the beach so there's always plenty to observe and it's a great running path.

These beautiful little girls all dressed up and playing instruments twice their size...very plunky sound...but still cool. This was followed by too many hours of Asian rap/boy band concert and we were done.

Adventure by the Bay

Three girls on a weekend adventure in San Francisco...shopping, playing and making new friends. Getting home was quite the treat - broken shoes, broken luggage, Chinese weddings, small towns, AirTran and delayed flights...home at 4 am. Ouch.

If you haven't been, there are a few things to know: 1) Pack a snack - the food lines are long, but worth it. 2) The dancing is really boring - SO boring! 3) They don't let you break the plates - I think you have to full Greek for that.

In southern California, a little frozen yogurt shop exists in Irvine on 17th Street. The Schrecks just call it "build your own". When you walk into the shop, you have to fight the crowd to get to the bank of yogurt dispensers. There are so many flavors. You stand there dazed but excited. Grab a sample cup and try a few - it's OK! Then determine the size of cup you're up to and fill it with goodness. I personally like the combination of a sweet and tart. Don't overdo it, you need room for your toppings. Next, you have nuts, candy, sauces, and fruit to choose from. Layer strategically as you want variety, but flavors should blend well. You might want to create "pockets" in the base of frozen yogurt to hide little treats you want, but may not go with the rest of the toppings you've selected. (Be warned that anything "gummy" seems tempting, but will not be a good combo with anything wet and frozen. ) Now, carefully move toward the cash register - you don't want to get bumped and spill toppings. Ah, the moment of truth. Put that masterpiece on the scale and get a hefty dose of reality as you realize that it's pay-by-the-ounce (another reason to go easy on the yogurt base and go for the less-dense toppings). You look at your treat and look at the expectant but wise sales girl and you realise you love your creation more than your greenbacks. You pay quickly (before buyer's remorse sets in), grab a spoon, napkins and find a seat - you may have to hover at a packed table or just head for the curb outside. Sit, eat, enjoy. Ahhhhhh!

The point of this little diatribe? Utah Valley citizens have now joined the millions who already "build their own". You can find your own little piece of heaven right here. They are not quite up to 17th Street , but I think all is well.

The Games

One of my friends will tell you I am not exactly a "sports buff", however, when the Olympics come around, I am suddenly aware of athletes, stats, trivia and scoring standards - much to the dismay of those who have followed it all for the last four years. (Truthfully, I pick this up mostly from my other friends who are not fair-weather sports enthusiasts.) I love to see gymnastics, swimming and track the best. I can't tell you how extraordinarily patriotic I feel that athlete stands up and claims a medal - really, I love that he/she is there competing. I love watching people push themselves to the very tip-top of their dreams and goals. I love watching what the human body can do with an indomitable spirit and sense of national pride. This series of games has been pretty super.
The fun is also in the host country's ceremony and culture. We get to peak into a far-away land for a wee bit. Having been in China this summer for little visit, my level of connection is just a bit higher too.
I am aware I am not the only one who may love the Olympics, but I just wanted to join the club for awhile.

It all started with a site visit to Zermatt to check it out for an event for work. It's a great (by great, I mean super great) little place with the most amazing grounds, suites, and a bakery to-die-for. The lovely Sales Director Annette gave me a night at the resort to "check it out" and I took her up on her offer. My friend Lori and I decided to take a girls' holiday. We drove up, camped out at the pool and read. It was so great! Unfortunately, we ran out of sunscreen and Lori now looks a little like a lobster.

What to do in a tornado...

When a tornado hits, run to the basement, grab your loved ones, grab a battery-powered radio, and grab a Mariachi band (of course).

So, I just finished an event in Chicago. The first (now annual) Unicity Latino Convention - I should mention here that I don't speak Spanish. In the middle of our opening reception a tornado came to town. Our party was broken up and moved downstairs in the basement. People gathered nervously while the lights flickered, the rain poured and the wind tore trees out just yards from us. The band played on. People danced, sang and continued drinking well after the tornado left. And the band played on. That might just be the theme for this event...

Our event staff was delayed over six hours by the storm, so I (the one who doesn't speak Spanish) ran registration (the badges being with the delayed staff). A box of product went "missing". The key parts of our set didn't show up and the contracted company decided they didn't have them to begin with. Also, our set didn't fit in the room anyway...which is a challenge if you want people there. Most of the event ran on "Latino Time". Did I mention that I don't speak Spanish? The roof in our event room started leaking. Half our presenters were stuck in airports due to the weather. People brought "guests" to the event so the food was, uh, consumed more quickly than planned. Our specially planned menu for vegans was frustrated by the number of people asking for meat. The microphones didn't work. The executive Vice President had his flight cancelled so we stalled a lot. Chicago has a lot of toll roads, construction, and poor signs, so I spent mucho time lost and mucho of time trying to miss my flight home.

On the upside...I got the penthouse suite and a cheese plate (non-vegan)! The AV was good (with some upgrade$). The staff came, worked hard and became heroes. The hotel staff was the best I have ever worked with - they even helped with our event registration (they were non-stop great)! The people were happy. The final set looked good. The leak stopped. The sun came out and the band played on.

I am not the first person to be grateful for a Wednesday. Many call it "hump day" and that's fine. I find that Wednesdays are usually very productive (it could be that I have fewer meetings on Wednesday) and the day goes by at a good and steady pace. I am not exactly sure what prompted this deep and abiding love for the middle of the work week, but in the spirit of gratitude, I will share all this good feeling via blog. Remember when you were a kid and you'd go swim in the lake or in the ocean and this little dark thought would creep up..."What if a fish bites me?" If you're old enough, the movie "Jaws" may have ruined open waters for life. Anyway, I am here to tell you that it's all going to be ok. Some fish will bite and you'll be so glad they did.

In China we went to this really nifty hot springs in ZhuHai (I may have mentioned it) and there were two pools of fishes who would happily nibble off any annoying dead skin off your body. There was a pool of little bitty fish would politely nibble and tickle away dead skin and the other pool had the Andre the Giant sized fish who would still do the job, but more aggressively. Both pools were full of folks both young and old. Some were skittish and some were in a deep state of nirvana knowing they would have baby-fresh skin once those fish had their way.

I should say the potential creep-out factor is high. We, as humans, don't generally feel comfortable with other living creatures using our bodies as a buffet of good eats. Occasionally, you may look down into the water and see an entire school of fish where you remembered your leg being. Once good twitch and the fish will scatter like dust in the wind. Don't worry, they will come back...they always do.

Now, I have heard from a number of sources that this craze is sweeping the nation. We have our lists of experiences we've had in life that are cool, odd, and for bragging rights...this one covers all three. I say give it a try then ask yourself "What if a fish bites me?" The answer might surprise you.

So Utah is beautiful. Summer is fun (in the mountains). My trusty pals Mike and Lori joined me for an overnight getaway to the hills. We roasted hot dogs, marshmallows and told stories around the fire into the wee hours of the night.

As we searched for wood for and camp-worthy treats, we felt the need for a giant gumball. This sucker was big enough to share and have a nasty contest of who could chew the solid sugar mass the longest. This was Fear Factor worthy. Ick.

The camping was great, by the way.

This year (to this point) has been a blur. Work, travel and stuff - that makes time fly by. Last week, I decided to enjoy it all a bit more. I have had breakfast in my backyard (twice), went camping, played at Deer Creek, spent time with really great people and went up the canyon just to read. Ahhh...that's more like it. Don't get me wrong, I like the spa and room service thing too, but a little bit of variety never hurt anyone. Anyway, work, travel and stuff still exists, but the point is to let some other things take space in my everyday.

I cannot tell you exactly why I am suddenly waxing philosophical, but Utah is a really pretty place to live. The moon is so great coming up over the mountains. The starts are so sparkly. The canyon is a magical place. The people are nice. The traffic isn't horrible (comparatively). There is always something to do - from shopping to spelunking (I do more shopping than spelunking really). Pretty much, I feel blessed to live in a pretty and safe place. There's always junk in any place, but the wonderful is there too. Which would you rather see? I think it's a choice, really. My mom always says "Bloom where you're planted." She didn't make it up, but she likes to say it whenever I get antsy for a new adventure. Solid words, mom.

Next we went through a crazy series of checkpoints again...China, Macau and then Hong Kong...another four stamps in my passport in one day.

Macau was a Portuguese province so it was a fun blend of cultures. We went to a A-ma Temple, Fisherman's Warf and the facade of a burned out Catholic church. One highlight was a Portuguese egg tart...which was the first non-rice meal I had eaten and I didn't care the consequences as it was completely fabulous. Macau has an amazing skyline, shopping and very feng shui casinos.

We took a huge ferry to Hong Kong and that was the final destination for our trip. It was nice to be in one place for a few days. Hong Kong was much easier for me to get around as many signs were in English. The metro was great...the shopping is as great as you hear and I was feeling up to eating whatever. It was great. We went to a science museum, took a water tour, had dim sum, and I even found a great little Pakistani shop to make custom made clothes and we just generally had a lovely time.

China June 6-7

After a lovely (but thankfully short) stint in a Chinese hospital, my stomach completely rebelled against the food, heat and whatever else and I found myself completely full of ick...and sick in the streets of Guangzhou. Let me say that I was slightly underwhelmed by the medical practices of China. I survived, but I am sure the Red Cross will ban me from donating blood for the rest of my life.

After that - some very long bus rides took us into Taishan and Zhuhai. We stayed in a hotel next to a lovely hot springs water park (of sorts). There were all sorts of baths of different temperatures, scents, and botanical additives. It was very interesting - as were the choice of bathing suits (fashion is a bit different in China).

It rained a lot where we were. We went out for a tour of the city and the roads were so overtaken with all the water, we couldn't get back to our hotel. The roads weren't great to start with as they were mostly potholes the size of humans connected with bits of intact pavement. We went to a botanical park with plants grown without soil, plants that recoil with human touch and gigantic pumpkins. Next, we stayed at a rather interesting restaurant waiting for the water to clear. This was not the cleanest place we'd eaten at and the "bathroom" was not the cleanest bathroom, but the whole experience sure was interesting. There was a long row of vendors with all kinds of sea creatures...you pick what looks good and send it over to the restaurant you're at to be prepared. At this point, I was only able to keep rice and tea down, so I watched...which was ok with me.

China Adventures June3 - 5

The fun continues in China...

We took a flight to Guilin - which is some of the prettiest country I have ever seen - and explored the country. We stayed in a gorgeous hotel and had a grand time touring Elephant Trunk Hill and Reed Flute Caves. The women peddling their wares were the most agressive salespeople I have ever come across. The followed us from the exit of the caves right up to the door of our bus. We went to a tea house and got to pick tea leaves, learn how to make different teas and attended a master tea ceremony (very cool).

The next day we took a river cruise on the Li River and then took a very long, sweaty walk in "town" in search of a bank. We did some shopping and found a crazy little market with all sorts of fresh food to buy - live snakes, live frogs, live chickens, etc. We then took in a Chinese opera (which I have learned I don't love) at this cool outdoor theater. The sets were great with hundreds of people in the cast moving across the river on barges, boats and huge floating sets. We then stayed in the scariest hotel of the journey (ask if you want the details) but had the best Engrish of anywhere we went (ask me about that too).

So the trip to China was not short. I should also add that the in-flight entertainment was down, so that makes a long flight so much longer. After about 27 hours of travel and what felt like 500 checkpoints from Hong Kong to Shenzhen, we arrived at the hotel.

Our first full day in China (June 2) was touring the area, learning about the local shopping (where to bargin, backroom "warehouses", knockoff grades, etc), a tour of a silk factory, jade shop, local mall and touring two amusement parks - Splendid of China and China Folklore Villiage.

My baby sister is now an RN! She's worked so hard and I am so proud of her. The Schreck family (Dad, Diane, Mom, Bill, Christy, Michael, Ann and Jeni) was present to cheer and celebrate as only the Schrecks can. We all descended on Jackson, Mississippi for an extended weekend of family bonding by eating, bowling (yes, bowling) and a lot of driving.

After all the formal ceremonies on Thursday and Friday, Jeni wanted to bowl as a family. Much grumbling was heard throughout the land, but once we got started the fun followed. We displayed rare (for good reason) form, some sabotage, and some incredibly well-hidden talent. We had some "sandbaggers" in our group. In the end, Jeni took the day with four strikes in a row...it was her day after all. We had a great dinner with lots of stories (Dad and Bill) lot of desserts (the south wins in that department) then went to a movie - what a rough day.

Some of our group had to head home, so the remaining five of us took to the road. We drove to New Orleans...we drove a lot. On the way we stopped to see a little plantation called Oak Alley and paid way too much to see way too little. We talked, some napped and told really bad jokes to pass the time. We had just an hour or so in the French Quarter before our dinner reservation so we tried to make the most of it. We saw great little shops with antiques, incredible architecture, hidden gardens and a variety of people. The area was aptly named as it reminded me of some of the neighborhoods I saw in Paris. Bourbon street lived up to its reputation...we'll just say that we didn't linger.

Oak Alley Plantation

There was no evidence of Katrina in that area, but people kept thanking us for supporting the city. Other parts of New Orleans looked depressed and it was amazing how much damage one city could take. Overall, it was a great experience and we were happy we went. I would love to go again and take some time to explore.

The Weary Travelers

On my last day there, Jeni and I went for a long walk on this path along a beautiful wooded area. The southern part of the country is so green and lovely (and humid). She and I went to the Mississippi Craft Gallery and saw great art and sculptures from local artists. We had lunch with Dad, Diane and Christy in a park on the reservoir and then Jeni took me to the airport. It was hard to leave. The weekend was so great...we'll just have to do it again.

Mieka Day

Today is Mieka's 30th birthday. Her husband Paul, her friend Jennifer and I planned a little surprise party. I made an incredibly rich chocolate-fudge cake (of which I am quite proud). We had ice cream, chocolate-covered strawberries, sparkling apple cider...all of which produced hyper kids and adults in a sugar-induced coma. It was lovely - here's to another 30 years of Mieka!

Sunday we took a train to Vernon and then to Giverny to visit Monet's home and gardens. The trip was just over an hour and so great - the area outside of Paris is lovely. We explored and took a lot of photos. I actually stood on the bridge Monet painted...very cool. We ate at a cute little outdoor cafe (one of maybe two restaurants in Giverny).

Monday we went shopping for food and fashion we wanted to take home; sadly, I found very little of either that easy to get home or wouldn't break the bank. After shopping, Lori, Lorie and Laura and I went to La Grande Mosquée de Paris. We ventured out without our guide and just maps, which means we ended up taking the "scenic route" to get there. There was a little north African restaurant we lunched at and then attempted to map our way home (a more direct route than we took to get there). It started raining and we spent a lot of time comparing maps, but we made it and we were very proud of ourselves.

We decided to make one more attempt to get to the top of the Eiffel Tower and found that the top was closed due to weather. We'll have to catch the view from the top the next time we're in Paris. Instead we had a makeshift dinner party in our little room with French cheeses, fruit and other treats from our MonoPrix or Champion markets.

Tuesday, we were up early and traveled home. We'll always have Paris.

Bonjour - deux

We went to Versailles Friday. It is so large and so grand, but the gardens were my favorite. We didn't really have time to explore (that would take a whole day to see just the gardens) but what I saw, I loved. I would love to go back, skip the palace and just walk and picnic and enjoy the outside.

We went out for a Seine River cruise Friday night to see the city from the river and it was pretty great. Just as we were ending the cruise, the Eiffel Tower was lighting up; what a great city!

Saturday was the Musée d’Orsay with a glorious Impressionist exhibit, lunch out in this adorable little pedestrian roadway, then to Napoleon's Tomb and the Musée d’Rodin (The Thinker, The Kiss) and Gardens.

Saturday night - Sacré Coeur and Montmartre and La Place du Tertre. Stephanie wrote months ago to get us into this beautiful little restaurant for some authentic French cuisine.

As with any trip...it's going by so quickly. Again, as with any trip, I am so lucky to get to experience this!

I am in Paris! We arrived yesterday morning, dropped off our luggage and started exploring. We went to buy our metro passes, museum passes and tour a little bit. By walking and walking we hoped to keep the exhaustion at bay long enough to get on "Paris time". We saw Eiffel Tower, Champs Elyees, Arc de Triomphe and Notre-Dame. I remember most of that only because in my jet-lagged state, I still remembered to snap some photos.

We're in this little hotel by the Louvre (and by little, I mean tiny rooms) - it's clean and right by the metro stop and a market. At the end of the day, I was ready for sleep, but we were then favored with a street concert and then learned what "city of light" is all about (technically, the nickname is about ideas, culture and architecture, but for this trip it was about bright lights all night long). With earplugs and eye covers sleep came and then a new day.

Today was the Louvre (completely amazing - I might have to move in to see it all) and Sainte-Chapelle and tonight we'll go up the Eiffel Tower and view the lights of the city.

Well, I find myself in South Carolina for the second time in 30 days (and for the second time in my life). Hilton Head Island is lovely - really lovely. I highly recommend it to any and all who like beauty, ocean breezes and gracious hospitality.
About my earlier thoughts on hushpuppies, I have been proven wrong (or at least the restaurant who served them to me before was very wrong). They are delightful and also recommended if you get them at The Old Oyster Factory, inc.

I want to be an astronaut. Well, to be perfectly honest, it was that or be in the White House. That is another story for another day. Back to space travel…my friend Sarah and I watched the International Space Station and the shuttle go streaking across the sky last week. It was very cool, very fast and very small. The only reason we knew it was, in fact, the shuttle and ISS was because we were watching for it and we were aware of the signs. Isn’t that a metaphor for life?

We stood there with our faces to the night sky enjoying the scene and imagining being there. I always wanted to be an astronaut and so did Sarah. She thinks it’s not too late, I think she’s the most optimistic person I know.

The ones you love

For Easter, I went to see my mom and she and I together went to see my grandparents (a lot of driving). My grandfather turned 94 on March 21; grandma turns 90 this September. Imagine how much life you live in 90+ years. These two people are amazing examples of positive thinking and working hard every single day. They are faithful and good. They are careful and smart. They love learning and books - they wrote a few about their own lives and other family members.

My mom and I made Belgium waffles with whipped cream and fresh strawberries for my grandpa's birthday dinner and he and grandma were in heaven (Meals on Wheels is not known for tasty cuisine). My grandfather told stories about things he saw and did in Europe during World War Two - about "buzzing" the Eiffel Tower, "hitchhiking" at the Munich airport to get to conference in Paris and desperately trying to get home (for six months) once the war ended. I wish I had a tape recorder in my pocket and could have recorded every precious word.

I felt grateful to them for their examples. I felt happy to be with them. I felt loved when I was with them.

March Madness

It's barely halfway through the month of March and I have been traveling. Williamsburg, Chicago and Columbia/Charlotte...very good exploring.

Before I start that - I have a new assignment at work. The 2008 Women's Summit went so well, it was decided that I might be useful in event planning (especially considering we no longer have an event staff and I have some experience). Yes, event planning is back on the resume. With that said...to all my friends who have started asking "Where did Ann go?", I am alive. I have been working to get caught up and on top of my new assignments. Between that and the travel, I have been a little "under the radar".

It's cold in Chicago - it may be windy, but in March that wind ain't warm. Anyway, I met some great people in our Latino market there and they are sweet, generous, and excited to build that market. They took us to some great spots to eat (veggie only), Art Institute of Chicago and John Hancock Tower (among a few cool places).

To top it all off, the hotel we've booked for our event in August put me in the Penthouse. It's bigger, nicer and far cooler than my house.

Columbia, SC

Lorie and I went to visit our friend Nicky. We went to Congaree National Park, Five Points Saint Patrick's Day Celebration and 5K, Columbia Zoo and Botanical Gardens, shopping, eating some good southern treats - like Hash on Rice (but not Hushpuppies). Alex (Nicky's energy-filled 3-year-old) kept us going and laughting. We had an amazing time.

Weekend Getaway

Ahhhhh...

My dear friend Lyndsey is getting herself hitched, so we spent time looking at photos and ideas for her wedding, drooling over her dress, and planning obnoxious games for her shower (to which she is very opposed). We talked books, ate yummy food, walked on the beach and just had such a great girl weekend. I felt spoiled. Add to that some time with my family (Michael, Cari, Kaela, Linsey, Dad and Diane) and I have only one complaint...not enough time.

It's snowing here - which to anyone living on the Wasatch Front, is nothing new. We've had some really nutty weather. The upside is a beautiful spring, so it all comes out in the wash.

Today is Valentine's Day. My dear brother sent me flowers (which totally made my day) and my friend Lorie gave me an adorably hideous "Love Stinks" doll, which makes me giggle every time I look at it. Tonight, it's pizza, popcorn and a chick flick with my gal pals. The good news is this requires no dressing up, overpriced meals or attempts to behave in a lady-like manner. This is not to say that we will regress into grunting cave women, but we will all just relax and enjoy the evening with people we feel totally comfortable around - sounds great to me!

At the risk of full-fledged cheese - I am grateful for the people in my life who love me and let me love them. That's a blessing I get everyday!

Costco, anyone?

I have an event at work this weekend (which has made my life a little nutty lately). Today was shopping day at Costco. Most of the meals are being prepared by the event staff instead of catering, so...$600 and two hours later, a flatbed trolley and a huge shopping cart were heaping with food. Next? Get all that food and three grown women into my rental car (I hit ice over the weekend and ended up in a ditch, so the Matrix is in the shop).

We did it all in one trip (go, go Dodge Avenger), so chalk up all that time playing Tetris as real-life preparation. The car rode a little low in back on the way back to the office - perhaps it was the nine cases of water?

I remember adults telling me as a child “Time goes by faster as you get older.” Tell that to a kid waiting for Santa to come or an upcoming vacation and you might as well be telling her that one day she will not grow up to be a princess or ballerina; it doesn’t make any sense. Time does go by faster now that I am older. I feel like when I look up every once and awhile when I wasn’t paying attention, a month has passed. This year was no exception.

So, here I am at the start of a new year. I can’t say that I am one to make a big deal about New Year’s resolutions. I don’t believe that bad habits will disappear or good habits will appear simply because I decided to write it all down and posted it on the fridge or mirror. With that said, I also believe in new beginnings. It doesn’t matter if it’s the start of a new year or simply a new day – start with a plan and execute it.

I have a general idea of what I would like to do for 2008, but not exactly a plan. At the risk of sounding down-on-myself, I have a plan to make a plan for almost every area of my life. Does anyone have any good ideas for how to plan to make plans to make life a little better?
